Kanyakumari district is one of the 38 districts in Tamil Nadu and the southernmost district in mainland India. There are more than a dozen popular tourist spots in the richest district in the state in terms of per capita income. It was historically part of the erstwhile Travancore as four Tamil-speaking taluks viz., Vilavancode, Kalkulam, Thovala and Agastheeswaram transferred to Madras State on 1 November 1956 based on language reorganization of states after agitation. Malayalam is a minority language in the the district with seven Assembly constituencies.
